another excerpt of [spooky]
another excerpt of
[spooky]
i see it
—the black eyes—
the red tongue—
the gray fur—
a lump underneath the buzzing clump of flies
still—motionlessdead
its mouth is open—
its tongue is loose—
flopped to the ground as if it is licking the earth—one last drink
like so many others
like the scattered bodies
bones upon bones
dust upon dust
scattered
this animal
this dead creature
there is no blood
just the flies—
jump—
hop—
flutter flutter flutter flutter
scurryscurryscurry
i lean forward
i swat what i can from the gray fur
a closer look
most of the flies scatter
pesky clouds of black dots
flies
flies
scatterscatter
flies
flies
scatterscatter
buzzzzzzzzzzzzhummmmmmmmmmmmbuzzzzzzzzzzzz
flutter flutter flutter flutter
some stay intact—like alwaysunafraid
everywhere
everywhere
i lift the small dead animal
move its body closer to my face
coo n
it took me awhile to find the name i was sitting therehaunched curled and couldnt come up with a thing
gray gray gray gray nothing but gray gray numbness gray gray
then it dideventually
a name popping sparking popping in the gray
things are coming faster now
not like before
when i was in the gray gray haze all the time
the nothingnessthe numbness
the animal is stiff—
firm
i place it in on my legs
i swat the flies
clouds clouds clouds clouds
scatterflutterscurry
scatterflutterscurry
this hardly does anything
they are always there—always always always always always
they scatter—they fly away
they always come back
no matter what i do—the flies—they never leave
almost like the birds
the dark dark birds that swirl overhead
the ones that perch right by us
squawk and watch and wait
jerkingone eye watching watching
the hawks the buzzards
but they dont always stay
not like the flies
the flies never leave
never leave
flutter flutter flutter flutter
i pluck at the animals tough fur—
pluck a piece away
slip it into my mouth
hard crunchy bland cold
my stomach growls sings grumbles growls
it is my only option
i know this
i must eat
i must
so i do

there are always flies
thick thick clouds of flies
through the pink and the orangethe yellow and blue
and always always in the black
they are always there
flutteringscurrying
flutteringscurrying
little black dots
jumping jumping
bouncing upon my flesh
nibbling at my bones
fluttering scurrying
fluttering scurrying
most of them gather in thick clouds
sometimes small pieces
flies
always
flies
flies
it was the first word that came to me
after all that time of
numbness
stillness
emptiness
that hazethat gray gray gray gray haze of nothing nothing
back when there were no words
very few pictures
just gray gray nothing
nothing
i struggledthinking
trying to get the name
knowing nothing of words
all i had were pictures blurs
haze
gray gray haze
i still tried
trying to get something on my brain and tongue
for a long nothing
nothing
then
something sparked
words came
the first one
that little black dot
flutteringscurrying
flutteringscurrying
then all those little black dots with wings
jumping jumping
flutteringscurrying
flutteringscurrying
flies
flyfliesflies
flies
there are screams and stenches
mud pools and gunfire
scattered bones and flying machines
so much
everywhere
the flies
they never leave
no matter what

they are always there
this is where they live
flies
flies
flies
flies
where everything else comes to
die
swat
swat
i used to swat
i used to swipe them away from my flesh
sometimes i would kill the
handfuls of scattered black wings and legs smeared upon my flesh
not often though
for theyre too fast
always jumping and fluttering and scurrying
i used to wonder no one else did
swat
the bodies the others
all around me
why they didnt bother
why they let them
these flies
flutterscurry
flutterscurry
all over their flesh and bones
whywhy
then i too understood
i was just like them
just like the othersmy surrounding neighbors
so many different strangers
yeteach of them
shaved heads
sunken eyes
skeletal frames
palepalepalepale flesh
swatting made no difference
killing made no difference
these flies
kill onetwo come back
they always come back
more more each time
flutterscurry
flutterscurry
some fights get me nowhere
like so many things
i let them flutter scurry
cover me
like flesh
they are waitingflies flies
flies flies
for when nothing moves anymore
when i no longer can
when i no longer want to
they can flutter scurry freelythey are waitingwaiting
flies flies
flies flies
it wont be long now

[spooky] coming tuesday, january 27th
Tuesday, January 27th.
The plan...launching an e-book version of [spooky], a novel that I re-released last autumn.
At that time, an e-book was not available, just a hard copy. But now...thanks to finally giving in to the ever-expanding world of modern technology, [spooky] can now be read, consumed, absorbed, enjoyed, and digested through iPhones and iPads and all the other iGizmos that are taking over the planet.
The e-books are pretty cheap...a mere $2.99 through the blurb site...but a huge chunk of the proceeds will be donated to the Humane Society. I figured this would make the most sense since a character in [spooky] is a three-legged black cat.
So, if you never take a moment to read it, your purchase is still being used to help fund a beautiful cause that helps animals. That alone should help warm your heart!
Tuesday, January 27th.
